The first issue received much acclaim and was sold at an amazing speed. The second issue presents a well improved approach with a wider range of featured artists and generally a lot more material to read, still being one of the few publications covering extreme power electronics and harsh noise in addition to more traditional industrial, ambient and neoclassical sounds. The interviews featured in Degenerate #2 include: Black Leather Jesus, Control, Deathpile, Deutsch Nepal, Facialmess, Folkstorm, Government Alpha, Incapacitants, IRM, Karjalan Sissit, Malpa, Noisebitch, Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio, Prurient/Hospital Prod., Rotten Piece, Stimbox and Ze'r0-sum. In addition, included is a live report from the Electric Gathering Festival along with well over 100 reviews of CD's, CDr's, vinyls, tapes, magazines and videos. 36/A4 pages, offset printed in black/white - Print run of approximately 600 copies - Written in English (Freak Animal/Kaos Control) $5.00 - * Brutum Fulmen "Flesh of the Moon" CD Very well done musique concrete tracks from this Connecticut based act. I've always admired the sounds that Jeff Wrench creates and this CD is one of the best collections of sounds I've heard so far in 2002. Great job. Definately Brutum Fulmens best work yet. Highly recommended. (Crippled Intellect) $10.00 - v.v. "note" CD A split release between C.I.P. and Crank Satori. Artistic packaging with minimal and tonal ambient recordings. (Crippled Intellect) $10.00 - Panicsville/Vertonen "Coagulation" 7" Limited to 300 copies on swirly purple vinyl in a really colorful layered package. How can you go wrong with track titles like "Such Tedious Assessments only Inflame this Dourest of Comedies", "Sure, That's All Well and Good - But A Rash is a Rash", "Your Name Dropping Skills are Matched Only by Your Lack of Charisma", "Anger Mismanagement" and "Third Reich from the Sun". (Crippled Intellect) $6.00 - v.v.v. split tour 7" Limited edition of 150, all of which seem to be #41 of 150. Curious.....I think this is v.v. and vertonen remixing each others material...but it's hard to tell...because there is some mention of "Throat" which might be another project. Whatever.....it's a nice record with quiet ambience of machine noise and such. (Crippled Intellect) $4.00 - * Gunshop "'\nø" CD Gunshop (Joe Mason and Jason Soliday) create improvised compositions utilizing rewired, rebuilt, broken and home-made electronics, including toys, effect processors and household appliances. '\nø, their first CD, successfully captures the rich and diverse results of their audio output, from sonorous minimal drones to jarring bouts of electronic noise and everything in between.gunshop have been performing throughout Chicago since 1997; a track from them will appear on the forthcoming simmer :: new electonic music from chicago CD on Boxmedia. (Crippled Intellect) $10.00 - Loren Chasse "Hedge of Nerves" CD "The work of sonic artist/investigator Loren Chasse (solo, Thuja, Coelacanth, id Battery, and various manifestations of the "Jewelled Antler collective") usually involves the documentation and manipulation of minute sound events (rubbings, scrapings, clickings) involving found objects and natural phenomena, emphasizing unexpected perspectives and connections. Even when performing in the psychedelic improv outfit Thuja, his "instruments" primarily consist of contact mics, a mixer, some rocks and twigs, and his imagination. Loren's processed field recordings are fragile and full of strange beauty and feeling." Label description (Anomalous Records) $12.00 - Tore Honoré Böe "Zenography [opus for unprepared piano + e-bow + street life]" CD "Acoustic minimalism drone string music. After working with the Origami Republika network for over a decade and finally releasing music under his solo name norwegian composer Tore Honoré Böe has made a name for himself in lowercase and noise music circles. this is his follow-up to the 'Siesta' album which we released two years ago, 'Zenography' is edited down from 14 hours of recordings made only with a naked piano and an e-bow." Label description (Jazzassin) $9.00 Lionel Marchetti & Jerome Noetinger "Mort Aux Vaches" CD "Two electro-acoustic devices, made of pieces and trifles (speakers, microphones, electronics, CD player, tape recorders, toys ). A really electro-acoustic blend that play without any external amplification system. Acoustical only in a way. Total improvisation. Absolute permanent anything. A sort of kind of play on substances, rythms and tensions. Sources-jam and trails cutted-up. From the limit of the audible to the scream of the larsen." - label description. (Staalplaat) $12.00 - * Michael Gendreau "55 pas de la Ligne au No.3" CD "Long-time San Francisco based sound artist, internationally know from his extensive discography with Crawling With Tarts, releases his first full length solo work. 55 pas de la Ligne au No3 is a microscopic study of dense sonic landscapes buried within antiquated turntable motors. Gendreau, an acoustician by profession, utilizes high sensitivity accelerometers to map detailed frequencies from a variety of old turntable motors and mechanics. This is a rare exhibition of the creative potential within this kind of technology." label description. After endless delays and production problems, this fantastic CD is now available. Originally submitted to Ground Fault for release, it ended up with my good comrades at 23five who really did the CD justice with it's quality packaging and elaborate 12 page full color booklet. (23five) $12.00 - * Nurse With Wound "Man With The Woman Face" LP "Extremely Limited Edition Clear vinyl 12" version of Man With Woman LP. After 2 years the eagerly awaited follow up to Nurse With Wound's acclaimed album 'An Awkward Pause' is here, 'Man With The Woman Face'. Nurse With Wound, now stripped down to just Steven Stapleton and Colin Potter offer a return to the mad sonic sound sculptures that have made Nurse With Wound such a cult." - label description. No overseas orders on this item please! (United Dairies) $22.00 - Concrete Violin "Eyegouge" CD (Deadline Recordings) $10.00 - Alial Straa "Tunnels/Stairwell" CDr "Our second AS reissue is another tape originally released by the Orogenetics Collective in a very small edition. This time, contributions come from Seth Nehil, John Grzinich, Michael Northam and Olivia Block. As the first is very smooth with moving, shifting drones, this is more oriented toward filed recordings and improvised instrumentation from Block. Between the two, there is an excellent contrast apparent between the various recording techniques and sonic dynamics that this group of artists explore. As with the first, it is available for one year at an affordable, low price." (Alluvial Recordings) $7.00 - Seth Nehil "From Cloud To Seed" LP "This is the first new release from Seth since 1998. Seth was part of a 1998 multimedia installation in Los Angeles at which he presented a series of six drawings titled "Basic Materials" in addition to a tape concert of this composition. The work is a study of the origins of life, degeneration and decay- themes often explored in Seth's work. The composition is distinct and striking from the onset. He utilizes a vast array of sonorities to produce a flowing piece of quiet hums and cracklings accented with loud blasts of crinkling leaves, snapping wood and breaking glass. It is an interesting blend of natural sounds, electronics and traditional instrumentation with contributions from mnortham, jgrzinich, Josh Ronsen, Olivia Block and Doug Easterly. Four of the original six drawings are reproduced on heavy, textured paper as a two part sleeve. It is a numbered edition of 300. (Alluvial Recordings) $10.00 - Control "Algolagnia" CD "After 1st album on Malignant Records, Control return with his strongest work which beats the first album easily. Detailed and interesting tracks of sheer brutality and violence of thick power electronics sound. Ltd edition of 500 copies, covers with silver print on matte black paper, in standard jewel box." Label description (Freak Animal) $10.00 - Grunt "Europe After Storm" CD (Freak Animal) $10.00 - Death Squad "Fucked in the USA" 3" CDr "DS is known from his great albums like "Theological Genocide", "Out-Patient" and "Isolation as Intent" and huge amount of tapes. During the years DS has created own personal sound. Some call it power electronics, some as "sound art". Analog synthesizers, a lot of samples, aggressive vocals and noises. 21 minute live piece with excellent sound and small professionally printed fold out cover. Limited 500 copies." Label description (Freak Animal) $8.00 - * Whitehouse "Wriggle Like A Fucking Eel" 12" BACK IN STOCK! The first new studio material since last year's Cruise album. (Xerxes) $16.00 - Feine Trinkers Bei Pinkels Daheim "Hungerhaken's Speckrolle" CDr German duo, Jurgen Eberhard and Oswin Czerwinski bring a very interesting 64 minute piece of strange ambience. Subtle beats and drones are blended in with various unknown sounds to make a great CD played ad low to mid volume while going about your busy life. I suggest listening to this at work. Expose your coworkers to something new. Limited to 157 copies in red "fake leather" cardstock sleeve. (Absurd) $9.00 - * EA "EA" CD "The very first CD recorded by EA, received a positive feedback in both underground and official press. Released in a regular jewel case, "EA" contains 7 tracks - a result of free improvisation. The most drony and foggy of EA's albums, this CD contains prepared acoustic elements (double bass, guitar, violin) intertwined with highly distorted field recordings. Organic drones, somewhere between soothing, dreamy pulsations of Robert Rutman's steel cellos and highly imaginative, warm sound manipulations of Noise-Maker's Fifes..." "warsaw trio EA are intent upon probing the deeper recesses of sounds created live in the studio with zero overdubs. Patryk Zakrocki on double bass, violin and guitar with Kamil Antosiewicz's drum programs and Artur Jaworski's sampler to create some impressively corroded landscapes. (...) each of their seven collective compositions is a momentum to the powerful aesthetic tensions to be derived from sustained notes and subtle gradations of tone" [review by Ken Hollings, The Wire, September 2000] (Captian Sparky) $9.00 - * ea "r" CD "After Cds on Cpt.Sparky and Open Circuit / Staalplaat and "7 on Drone Records this is the 4th release of this unique polish project. On "r" practically no instruments were used, only field recordings and found sounds from around the world (Spain, Norway, Morocco, Austria and various locations in Poland) + the purest sounds of electronic origin: sine waves and white noises. Some of them were left untouched, while some were heavily filtered and abused using laptops, cracked software, and 8-track HD recorder, so in result nothing on this record is what it seems... At the beginning there is nothing but silences suddenly something starts to grate, grind, scrape, somebody's steps reaches your ears silence and a slow, revolving, veiled, drone coming from away electronic feedback, strange, prepared voices------ are we in somebody's room? growing, harmonic noises beat of hard disc, whisper of electrodes. 56 minutes of walk, run, contemplation in a unforeseeable soundscape of "r". Special paper cover." label description (Ignis Projekt) $9.00 - Ultra Milkmaids/Telepherique/Inox Kapell "Nan Tikum Remixes" CD "De-constructed melodies and rhythms, subtle harmonies and subliminal noises, digital drops and clouds of sound ash, electronic pulsation and evolving loops, subsonic distortions and floating drones. Collaboration work between those French and German artists. The result is not just a split CD with tracks recorded separately by each artists. They shared sounds, samples, patterns and re-mixed them into a totally new whole - 9 abstract minimal sound collages of the purest beauty. Special paper cover." label description (Ignis Projekt) $9.00 - * Spear "Sapphire Flower" CD "Minimal, electro-acoustic sound collages. Deep, subliminal drones in a glow of subtle, high harmonies. Between consciousness and dream, darkness and illumination, sound and silence. 8 compositions for loops, oscillations, murmurs, ripples, noise and voice. Recordings brightened by priceless help of Bartek Q_niak (QKS). "Amidst glowing ripples of sound culled from prepared contrabass, tapereversed bells and resonant drones, Spear sporadically insert a series of poetic narratives, treating the voices with a variety of processes (timestreaching, downpitching, cathedral reverb) to keep the enunciation of words enigmatic (the text is supplied in the sleevenotes for handy decoding). Sapphire Flowers' is suitably sombre and funereal, but unlike the staged presence of the black eyeliner and crushed velvet crowd, it never appears heavy-handed, ghastly or bombastiacally theatrical. Instead, Spear offer a subtle and pleasant remainder of impossibly convoluted anagrams and droning adventures conjured by the seemingly forgotten German post-industrial ensamble Cronioclast." (The Wire, January 2002) Special full colour cover with inserts. (Ignis Projekt) $9.00 - * EA "[~.]" CDr "Clicks, rattling and guitar build, underscored by a tone and distant trilling. A brooding string synth pressages the move into the final sections, shooshing brushes and ringing percussive sounds, echoed, easing out to a complex soft end of tones, possibleprocessed guitar, washes and blips. (...) Of course there is more than this in here, the interplay of background and foreground, the entry and exit of elements, and the whole together makes great listening. " [Ampersand etc.] "Faint rippling, keening mists, symphonic blurts, radiowaves and other unusual murky occurences are actually damned hard to explain... but certainly worth wandering around in to wonder about. " [review by David J Opdyke, Ambientrance] (Staalplaat/Open Circuit) $9.00 - Exsanguinate "The Black Acts" CD "EXSANGUINATE is the new Death Industrial project from Thomas Garrison of the Power Electronics behemoth CONTROL. "The Black Acts" contains 13 tracks of landmark Dark Electronics, meticulously layered and constructed these tracks grate and churn forth the repugnance in the human extreme with a sonic exploration of torture techniques through the ages. Dense composition, evolving frequencies and a tragic ferocity make "The Black Acts", the projects first release, one of our favorite Crionic Mind releases to date. More exceptional Dark Noise from the American Shores. Limited to 500." - label description (Crionic Mind) $9.00 - Never Presence Forever "Disturbed Visceral Nociception" CD "NEVER PRESENCE FOREVER unravel slowly with a profoundly well conceived album of Bleak Minimalism and Dark Ambience. To this foundation they add somniferous hints of melody, abrasion and rhythmic punctuation. Rich textural drifts and detailed craftsmanship give this release a enveloping penetration and depth. NPF has a few limited releases but "Disturbed Visceral Nociception" is the marks the first widely available release. NEVER PRESENCE FOREVER's Andrew Westerhouse also runs AVERSIONLINE eZine. Limited to 500." - label description (Crionic Mind) $9.00 - Wilt "Wither" Wilt extol the invisible corners of the thirsty earth with this exaltation of decay and reclamation. Best described as Noise Ambient, "Wither" is a aural quagmire of dusky vapors and ivy draped relics, grating erosions and the thorny shadows that rise and fall across dying landscapes. Moldering Dark Noise from this inspired American project. Limited to 500 copies. (Crionic Mind) $9.00 - Merzbow/Shora "Switching Rethorics" CD "Let me start with Merzbow and get that out of the way. Noise, feedback, more static, high pitch noise, static, feedback, static. I personaly like the song that goes "SHHHHHSHSHHHSHHSHHS, SCREEEEEEEEEEECH, SHSHHSHHSHSHS, ZKZKZKZZZKZK". On with Shora... Hailing from Geneva, Switzerland, Shora are musical force not to be taken lightly. Actualy, in the realm of the hardcore/noise core acts out there, Shora take the cake for me, hands down. Some of the most punishing, violent sounding hard/noise-core i've heard in a long time. I can see why The Dillenger Escape Plan and Botch took them on tour in Europe." Fairly weak Merzbow tracks....great hardcore stuff from Shora. (Bisect Bleep Records) $9.0 - Kenneth Atchley "Fountains" CD Long time sound installation artist from San Francisco debuts (finally) with this beautifuly packaged CD. Booklet contains various pictures of the "Fountains" exhibit that was used to make the recording. "These fountains were formalized over a period of 4 years: reading J. Antonio Maravali's The Culture of the Baroque; glossy fashion magazines, British dance journals; books of folds, multiplicities, architecture, the lives and deaths of poets and painters; listening to CDs and radio Handel, various Bachs, F. Couperin, Schubert; all for hours by fountains in the temporary clarity of nicotine, sitting absorbed in the white spray of water, in audience of street opera, traffic, office buildings; deafening sound of patrons and music in overly designed ephemeral restaurants; bass of automobile sound systems doppler along sycamore lined Grand Avenue; rain falling in alley outside my apartment; contemplating Kelly, Rothko and geometry of public spaces; drinking wine slips from glass through conversation to fountains down water steps and steep office canyons study and sink into catalogs of monochrome paintings and years torn from elegance and noble materials by speed of blur of noise of mid-air contemplation of The Moment Poised. Of the Artifice of Stasis: fountains flow from accoustic spaces between compressed crystals and metal, diaphragms and water, vessels and pumps, airless circuits and field recordings: trashcans, metal tubs, tap water, PVC tubing, over sealant and mats, beneath black polyethylene and waterproof tape, through speakers and headphones at three minutes and ten seconds of track one stereo is a representation of identity; while in discreet channels, identity - though not specificity - subsides and noise becomes this plaza of unnamed and future into a new fountain. This is not of waves, nor ripples on the surface; but on top of that: the foam, the embellishment." Kenneth Atchley (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $10.00 - Stegm "The Stench of a Coward" CD "hard subconscious ambient, dingy industrial loops and power electronics with a heavy voyueristic mood. ltd.ed. 500" label description (Hospital/Peel Back the Sky) $9.00 - V/A "Site of Sound: of Architecture and the Ear" Book and CD. The book is 178 pages (7"x7"). It containes writings about music and sound by A. Wollscheid, Hildegard Westerkamp, Brandon LaBelle, Leif Elggren, CM von Hausswolff, Ralf Wehowsky, Loren Chasse, Steve Roden and many others. The CD contains tracks from A. Wollscheid, H. Westerkamp, John Hudak, RLW, B.LaBelle/S. Roden and many more. Hard core "academic" Third printing. (Errant Bodies Press) $17.00. - V./Ultra Milkmaids "Drone & Unease" CD "The ultra milkmaids from France meet v. from Washington DC and give birth to a mutant baby quite unlike either of its parents. Abstract, dense music that you can hum and that will swirl around in your head. zeromoon's first real cd release. " (Zeromoon) $9.00 - Loren Chasse "Fantasy Apparition" CDr "Outdoor recordings of genius loci conjurings. Released in February, 2002. Limited edition of 200 numbered copies. CD-r in folded paper cover with booklet, hand-drawn disc label ( every copy has a different drawing ) , contained in hand-printed textile bag. $10 (s'agita recordings) - Lasse Marhaug "One Eye and Wathcing" 7" "Lasse Marhaug should be know to all fans of leftfield electronic music and noise by now. He has been active on the international tape/noise scene for over 10 years, with a production of frightening proportions counting over a 100 releases as solo artist or collaborator. The last couple of years he has used most of his time in the lower-case electronica duo Jazzkammer. Jazzkammer has released albums on Rune Grammofon and Smalltown Supersound. Outside Jazzkammer Marhaug has collaborated with artists like Aube, Merzbow and Kevin Drumm (record due on Smalltown Supersound this spring). The two compositions making up this 7" goes even further than his acclaimed "Nothing But Sound From Now On" album of last year. The A side track "One Eye and Watching" is floating between a calm digital ambience and a roaring voicelike sound almost chanting. Building slowly against a cut-up climax. A beautiful piece, on the border to the melodic. The untitled B side track starts with a short cut-up loop going out of phase and returning before a bass drone enters with small clicks disturbing the peace. Limited to 500 copies. Part of the Safe as Milks "Melektonikk" 7" series." label description (Safe as Milk) $4.00 - Tore Honore Boe "Solvstoy" 7" "Tore H. Bøe has worked as a solo artist for two or three years, but before that he has participated on hundreds of releases, and even more concerts as a member of different projects in the Origami Republika art collective. He has also been Origami's coordinator since 1990 and still is. Tore's credo as a composer/sound artist is to turn up the volume on the things we usually don't hear, carfully looping and filtering them. By doing this he creates a sort of microscopic and extremely clean cut drone music. Tore H. Bøe is currently working on collaboration projects with sound artists Fransisco Lopez and Roel Meelkop, and multimedia artist Nelle Ink. Limited to 500 copies. Part of the Safe as Milks "Melektonikk" 7" series. " label description (Safe as Milk) $4.00 Absurd - *Toy Bizarre "kdi dctb 116" CDr "KDI DCTB#116 is an audio piece made up of recordings made in Dom Ruiz's garden, in Saint Aulaire, Correze, and is intended to accompany the video projection of still shots of the garden (taken every fifteen days from a tower built for this purpose), and of arbitrary close-up shots of vegetables and flowers taken by Dom and Jean-Paul Ruiz between spring 1999 and autumn / fall 2000. The perspective of KDI DCTB#116 is one of sound cartography; but it is not a faithful restitution of reality, rather an interpretation of the different elements which are gathered, then sculpted in the studio. The composition accompanies still video shots, and reconstructs a possible sound space around the vegetable garden. The sound space is made up of four main elements: - wire fencing around two sides of the garden, which produces long resonances and oscillatory movements when the wind blows, these elements also delimit the depth of field; - two 'blocks' of vegetables which frame the fixed shot, and whose size and thickness vary with the seasons and, with the wind, produce more or less pronounced whispers; - the 'ground' elements, including the movement of earth worms in the earth, or the movement of earth with tools; - insects, birds and sounds of human origin." We will refer to Monstre's sound as "harsh pop". In this respect it may remind some people of the beautiful music of Slap Happy Humphrey, a supergroup fronted by Alchemy/Hijokaiden's Jojo Hiroshige." label description $9.00 - Francisco Lopez Untitled #123 CD ""Untitled #123" starts off with a minute of silence, forcing the listener to pay close attention, like on many of Lopez' recordings. Incredibly subtle changes and fluctuations in volume and body begin to take place. The piece begins to display the Silophone sounds more clearly at the 10-minute mark, dark metallic resonation that feels strangely gothic. This continues until sharp piercing slices of mechanical sounds cut in an out of the piece every few seconds (imagine being subjected to giant blasts of machinery). This continues until the 19-minute mark where all audible sounds dissolve and all that is left is some of the most demanding low-end ambiance one is likely to experience. Later, sounds begin to take shape again and if you were not aware of the sound source you would swear this was the soundtrack to a very dark and frightening place. At the 43-minute mark, with the power constantly mounting your heart pounding, trembling with fear, you wonder what lies ahead. You imagine being in absolute darkness and something incredibly loud, a mechanical drone is approaching and you have absolutely no idea of what it could be. Finally after an incredible 14-minute climax the piece falls into near silence. For the next 8 minutes the piece continues with just a murmur of sound deep below the surface, is it really that low? Are your ears just not picking up sound due to what has just transpired? The end result is an incredibly unique listening experience that bears many of the qualities of the stunning concerts of Francisco Lopez." label description $9.00 - Bastard Noise The Analysis of Self-Destruction CD serves perfectly as the soundtrack for mans destruction of the earth. It features an orchestra of home spun instruments and lo-fi electronics, field recordings and power electronics. $10.00 - Brume & Artificial Memory Trace 1st Encounter CD "1st Encounter was completed in 1996 and is part of an ongoing series of releases by Artificial Memory Trace. The sound on this particular installment is as one would expect given the backgrounds of the two artists: a mixture of electro-acoustic and concrète sounds. The two artists are forced to create their music using the other's music as the principle source material, and it really changes both of their sounds quite a bit. Often people think of collaborations in the same sense as split records, but this is not a split release. There is really is a good sense of the interplay between AMT and Brume. 1st Encounter is packaged exquistly in a digi-pack with full colour artwork and is a limited edition and will not be repressed." label description $10.00 - Keiji Haino Abandon all words at a stroke so that prayer can come spilling out 2xCD "Keiji Haino is easily one of the most exciting live performers of our time, exuding a passion and an intensity rarely matched. This double CD includes two new recordings by Haino, focusing on hurdy-gurdy and wave drum. The two discs both come off like the soundtracks to dark rituals; spiritually heavy and exhibiting an emotion which is very dark and sad; periods of mourning occasionally interrupted with moments of rage. Disc 1 [hurdy gurdy] is in the tradition of our previous release with Keiji Haino, So, Black is Myself and is a subtle drone piece with beautiful vocal accompaniment. Disc 2 is a more abrasive affair focusing on wave drum and vocals. This double CD is exquisitely packaged in beautiful black card stock gatefold jacket with purple and silver metallic ink artwork. " label press release $15.00 - Merzbow Doors Open at 8 A.M. CD This is one of the most adventurous outings made by Merzbow. Recorded during the same era as Aqua Necromancer, this recording also incorporates the use of sampled sounds. However, this time Akita is paying homage to his love of free jazz, free-jazz drummers to be precise. It includes tracks such as Tony Williams Deathspace, Lyons Wake, Metro and Bus and an unbelievable cover of John Coltrane's The Africa Brass Session, Vol 2. $10.00 - Francisco Lopez Untitled #104CD One of the most unique recordings yet from Francisco. $10.00 - Merzbow Aqua Necromancer CD $13.00 - M.S.B.R./Kengo Iuchi CD split and collaboration. $13.00 - V/A Coalescence CD Aube, Masonna, Merzbow, Knurl, David Kristian, Artificial Memory Trace, Crawl Unit, Dachise, Entarte, K. Endo, PBK and Sensorband, etc $10.00 * Alluvial - John Hudak Helen Marie: Reinterpretations 2 x CD "When John Hudak recorded the "Don't Worry About Anything; I'll Talk To You Tomorrow" compact disk for Alluvial in early 1998, through a series of events, we ended up in possession of an extra piece. We had always intended to release it in some format but remained unsure how to use it. We approached John with the idea of presenting the piece to other composers, many of whom we had in mind prior to raising the idea with John. Upon receiving John's OK, we set about sending it to the composers we chose and a couple of John's choosing. The project ended up taking a lot longer than anticipated. It was well worth the wait. The original track, the source material, is the first track heard. This is followed by Jason Lescalleet. Jason created a shifting, moving tapestry of sounds with beautiful ebb and flow. Marc Behrens uses his signature, understated approach to create a piece full of layers with focus on the nuances of tiny sounds. Sukora's contribution uses small sounds that are almost imperceptible with periods of near silence. Peter Duimelinks explores the extremes of the original by focusing on the highest frequencies and lowest, bassy rumbles. These are blended with a gentle rhythmic pulse that is easier felt than heard. John himself created yet another rich soundscape that is hard to imagine having been coaxed from the original. Francisco Lopez approaches his track with a violent furor that culminates with stark silence. Eric Lanzillotta pays homage to an earlier phase of John's work from his days using the analogue tape. His piece rumbles steadily along and crushes the original beyond recognition. Frans de Waard presents a piece varied with buzzes and whirling sounds compacted into so many layers. The final statement is from Leif Elggren. It sounds as though he ran the original backwards in layers. It is accented with loud, piercing blasts of static interference. The variety over the two compact disks is exactly what one would hope for from a project of this scope. It is varied, confrontational and cohesive. This is a beautiful statement that compliments what John does best- single-minded, gentle soundscapes that are deeply personal and peaceful. John's compositions set a calm, serene mood for the listener. Fans of his style will not be disappointed. The CD's are packaged in a 12 page booklet which includes photo work from John Hudak and Rachael Jackson. This is a limited edition of 500 copies" $16.00 - Tidal The Four Rivers CDr "This is a project of New York composer David Brownstead. This is his first release as "Tidal" aside from a privately released cassette from a few years ago. The concept behind these recordings are "The Four Rivers" as defined by Japanese author, playwright and cultural icon Yukio Mishima. These rivers are the converging philosophies that Mishima chose to live by and illustrated so well in his considerable body of work. These recordings present moods- sonic meditations, to accompany the ideas present in Mishima's writing. David tends to use older, analogue equipment to record with. Here, he loops dark, gentle, ambient drones that are repetitive and quietly reflective. This is David's effort to explore the complicated, strained life of the author and mirrors a part of his own personality and intense interest in Eastern Philosophy and Arts." $8.00 - Daniel Menche October's Larynx CD "The first new full length release from Menche in more than two years. Here, Daniel presents five untitled pieces of powerful sonic continuity. From the beginning of the first track, we hear richly layered electronic drones that echo amid buzzing, furious textures built around his signature, playful darkness. Over the entire hour, the intensity builds in a dense ebb and flow until the pinnacle is reached at the beginning of the last track- a single bell chimes and continues to grow into a massive, overpowering zen- like hum. With this release, we are undoubtedly hearing one of Menche's finest moments thus far. A beautiful edition of 500 with artwork from Erik Stotik. $8.00 - Animist Quartets CDR "Another work from Jeph Jerman, this one previously unreleased. While projects like Hands To use electronic methods to manipulate field recordings and sounds from natural objects, animist quartets allows the natural objects used in the creative process to stand on their own. No electronic modifications are used with these recordings. The variety of sounds that Jeph (along with others here) can coax out of seeds, shells, pods and stones is truly fascinating. The compositions are wove in a rich tapestry that sounds like the earth gently vibrating in the middle of no where. (Alluvial Recordings) $8.00 - Augur A Slender Thread of Silence CD-r "Augur is Steve Brand, an artist based out of Kansas City. He has mostly released tapes and CDR's on his own. This one is of his very few recordings to have been issued to a wider audience. He often explores a wider range of sounds and dynamics than other artists might. With this recording, he has chosen a quieter approach which brings to mind the work of Meelkop, Lopez and Lucier. The pieces are long and building with subtle changes and a wide variety of sounds- field recordings, found instruments and voice. That said, it is 76 minutes in length and one of his strongest works to date." $7.00 - Hands To Croatoan CDr $8.00 - John Hudak Don't Worry About Anything, I'll Talk to you Tomorrow CD $8.00 Anomalous Records - * Points of Friction "Sackcloth and Ashes" CD "Points of Friction scrapes together a mind-bending menagerie of sound from the panorama of objects and equipment they work with. Their process-oriented artistry invokes apparitions of the ear, with multi-dimensional sonic textures that span from quirky, seductive lullabies to revolting sensual assaults. The unorthodox exploration of keyboards, guitars, toy instruments, the assemblage of field recordings, noise improvisations, and tape loops tantalize the senses with arousing emotive power. The opus title track is a compendium of improvisational soundings and field recordings that include a chorus of squeaky swings, a cat's purring, snapping shrimp, a diseased lung, and cacophony on a yard sale card rack. Exquisitely abrasive and haunting tracks 1 through 6 yield to the perfumed machinery and melodious hypnosis of the remaining tracks. Re-released on CD, the disc is lavishly packaged in beautiful silver and black in an eye-rattling multi-paneled silk-screened die-cut cover that undermines perception in the friction manner. The low-key intensity of Points of Friction may affect heart rates and breathing patterns. It is probably best listened to in a darkened room." Label description $14.00 - * Jeph Jerman "The Second Attention" CD "using no computer, no editing, and even no amplification, he has turned to acoustically playing natural objects - carefully chosen rocks, shells, driftwood, branches, seed pods, and pine cone. from these simple and often overlooked objects, he deftly coaxes minute and often unexpected sounds. far from a novelty exposition of odd noises, his music is played with skill and purpose. his is a music to be played live, and so far only has been. partially this is due to the difficulty of recording all details of his performance, while not also capturing the disturbances that are inherit in most situations. but after many unsatisfactory attempts, we finally have a recording that lives up to the quality of sitting quietly next to Jeph and experiencing his sounds." $14.00 - * Jeph Jerman "Tug Ear" 7" Absolutely amazing drum improvising...a varied and cohesive set of music using techniques such as playing drum heads with rubber balls, playing cymbals with finger while bending them to change the pitch and timbre, flaying the kit with guitar strings, and augmenting the kit with his key chime (found house keys suspended), toy xylophone, and overtone singing. A limited, numbered edition of 200 copies. $7.00 - Agog Dust is Their Food and Clay Their Meat LP "This LP is strictly an analog affair and is 96% free of conventional musical instruments and electronic effects. The sound sources (instruments?) are primarily acoustic and would include: metal eraser shield played with human breath, cardboard speaker cone bowed with a coat hanger, blow-dryer heating element, hard plastic combs, a broken TV set (unplugged), sea shells etc. These objects are amplified using a variety of contact microphones" - Damian Bisciglia. $11.00 - * Eric Lanzillotta "Water Tower" 10" $9.00 Artware - Kiyoshi Mizutani Transcend Sideways CD $10.00 - Yuzuru Syogase/Kaiser Nietzsche split CD $9.00 - Schloss Tegal The Grand Guignol CD $10.00 - Schloss Tegal Oranur III - The Third Report CD $10.00 - SAT Stoicizmo Mah 2 CD $7.00 - * V/A Dedication CD with Freudwerk, D.D. Features Koji Tano and MSBR, PNF, Kazumoto Endo, Government Alpha, R.H.Y. Yau, Ching-Shen-Ching, Chris C. Lin, Yukiko, MAGMAX, S. Isabella and Z.S.L.O. Highly recomended. $10.00. - RHY Yau/Scot Jenerik Meat CD An absolutely brilliant recording. Nearly flawless. One of my favorites of 1999. (Auscultare) $8.00 - Scott Arford/Randy H.Y. Yau "Edit for Unconsciousness" CD "the latest sonic collision between San Francisco sound activists, Scott Arford (7hz, Radiosonde) and Randy H.Y. Yau (23five Incorporated), is a sinister collection of creeping nightmares. Frenzied insect chatter, seeping gasses, isolated electrical crackling and violent convulsions float in a murky underworld of drifting waveforms. The resultant miasma is an obscenely beautiful extended moment, always hinting that something horrible is waiting just beyond the threshold of consciousness." (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $9.00 - Lionel Marchetti "Sirrus" CD This marks the beginning of what I hope to be a long standing collaboration between Ground Fault Recordings and Auscultare Research. This CD is the 3rd one by French artist Lionel Marchetti in as many months. There is a CD on my own label (see above), one on Intransitive and now this one. All three are some of the best recordings I've heard in 2001 and probably 2000. All three are pretty different. This is Musique Concrete at it's finest. I can't recommend it more. (Auscultare/Ground Fault) $9.00 Banned Productions - A.M.K. Each track builds with minimal buzzing & beeping sounds and progresses to rich, organic and sonic pieces, centered around backing effects such as shortwave radio, tapes, improvised collages of sampled environmental sounds (most heavily treated beyond recognition) and acoustic & home made instruments being taken to the limit of use. The song titles, such as 'phosphoric water' & 'electric air' attest to the natural sounds utilized in these recordings. Not noise, but complex, textured soundscapes meant to tickle & entice ones tempanic membrane. At times bordering ambient, the songs can suddenly change to electro-acoustic sounds, bordering musique-concrete and back again to minimial/ambient creations. Maybe in comparison to the works of Philip Doray or the early pieces of Pierre Henry in how they sampled natural sounds that were later altered and processed to give a unique and creative look at how those sounds can be manipulated & changed to create a new soundtrack of life, sometimes sounding very harsh- but not noise! A beautiful disk of experimental/improvised music. An edition of 500 copies on CD only with full color double sides inserts with artwork by Influx studios."- label description $9.00 - * Beequeen "Der Holzweg" LP "LP format of 200 copies on audiophile vinyl. Each copy is signed & numbered by Beequeen. Beequeen happened as a result of a Legendary Pink Dots' intervention. In the Winter of 1988 Freek Kinkelaar was asked by Pink Dots-singer Edward Ka-Spel if he would be interested in doing the solo support act to the LPD performance in Utrecht on 13 January 1989. Freek got together with industrial veteran Frans de Waard whom he had met a couple of years previously. The music on this LP is best described as heavily analog sounds layered with effects and recordings bordering ambient soundscapes in this sonic journey." - label description $12.00 - * Aranos "Whilst Your Gaiety Melts" 10" " 'Whilst Your Gaiety Melts' starts out with rhythmic piano and violin with mixed effects and slowly morphs into a very long and sweet violin drone with haunting deep vocals. 'Octopus Field' is a more low-fi, free flowing soundscape with layers of minimal sounds and effects. smoooth...and abstract! Brilliant avant-garde music that you must have!" - label description $9.00 - Rick Reed "Music for the Rothko Chapel" 10" Almost completely monochromatic, in deep shades of purple and near black, the paintings at Rothko Chapel in Texas seem to want to pull the viewer into it's mysterious world of the void. Reed wanted to create not so much a composition about the experience, but an actual soundscape in which one could lose themselves while inside, Slowly taking in the paintings, possibly wearing walkman type headphones for the full effect. The music like the paintings, is almost totally monochromatic. Starting with a single bit of guitar feedback, recorded, then played back into the room with additional bits of feedback added each time, recorded layer by layer until 'all the brush strokes were rendered nearly invisible'. The end result is not at all like feedback, but more like a huge dark cloud of electronic sound, like a totally bent orchestra with a way out string and flute section hell bent on exploring the nether regions." - label description $9.00 Betley Welcomes Careful Drivers - Ashtray Navigations Tristes Tropiques" CD $8.00 - Shifts 7 Monochromes CD-r Seven variations on a tape of acoustic guitar, e-bow and korg ms20. At last, BAND OF PAIN is working in the medium to which its most suited. Sinewave and noise generators interact to form a textural foundation for explorations into degradation, distortion and rupture. Commenced in Paris in late 2000 and completed in Melbourne one year later, both composers bring an ascetic sense to each track's formation allowing the minutiae of sonic detail to evolve gradually, gently modulating between sporadic and dense moments of activity. $10.00 - * Philip Samartzis Windmills Bordered by Nothingness CD is an electroacoustic reminder of these altered psycho-acoustic states which one achieves by living within the noise of one's city. For noise is merely sound without apparent organisation; the sonic without perceivable direction. Samartzis' strident processing of field recordings and an almost ascetic placement of aural shapes and tonal cues casts an imaginary wandering though the thunderous channelling of urban noise. Therein, one can discover much silence, peace, calm. $10.00 - Darrin Verhagen Hydra $9.00 - Darrin Verhagen Soft Ash CD $9.00 - Alan Lamb Primal Image CD Dark ambient pieces culled from contact miking telegraph wires in the Australian desert. In response to the invitation to make a work for radio I decided to produce all the sound-materials while in Vienna, drawing upon a direct relationship to the city and my experience there. This process consisted of primarily two activities: firstly, amplifying pre-recorded sounds of 'crowds' from various events and functions in public spaces in Vienna, and re-recording them - in essence, overlaying public spaces and public crowds on top of each other and highlighting the 'multiplicity' of overheard voices, and through this, how language becomes abstracted when it is situated against public space; secondly, taking a series of walks around Vienna with contact microphones taped to the bottoms of my shoes. What resulted from these walks was a kind of sonic residue of the meeting between body and space, between private experience and public environment, underscoring how as an individual one is always part of a greater situation.; 'Pillow Talking'(in collaboration with l. chasse): This work was produced as a parallel performance to a concert by John Hudak at 7hz, San Francisco, September 2000. The parallel performance occurred through recording Hudak's own performance by placing contact microphones on a glass floor from a mezzanine within the performance space. In addition, a second contact microphone was mounted on a metal cooking funnel which I then placed inside my mouth. In essence, the final work is a combination of Hudak's performance and the subsequent "translation" of it as recorded through the microphones. This 'translation' is in turn mediated through the architectural structure of the performance space, the metal funnel and through the cavity of my mouth. Giuseppe Ielasi composed and worked on one track, 'leda prova col pavone', which became a sort of 'pop' experiment . all texts come from the original poetry of Corrado Costa, an incredible and unfortunately little known poet, connected to the Italian fluxus scene. the packaging is the same cardboard folder used on the other fringes releases, and includes a folded booklet with the texts (Italian and English) and two drawings by Costa himself. limited edition of 400 hand-assembled, numbered copies." $12.00 Gameboy - Karen Thomas/Foboff Welcome to the Boys Club 3" CDr $10.00 - Ashtray Navigations "Last Kiss Amateur Frequencies" 7" clear lathe cut acitate. $7.00 - Lasse Marhaug/Brutum Fulman Tender Wreckage LP Norway and Connecticutt's finest sculptors collaborate to remix each others' finest works. $8.00. - V/A Popular Music for Popular People CD with Goverment Alpha, Cock ESP, Bob Marinelli, Spastic Colon, Contamination Diet, Lockweld, DJ Smallcock, Late, MSBR, Noumena, Goat, Fruehauf, Sodium, Dan Bodah and John Wiese. Strange lo-fi, dark sounds. Very nice. Ltd to 8 in this package. $10.00 - A Sonic Deterrent/Prurient Hunt In Couples 7" $4.00 - V/A Beast with Macropurient (Macronympha + Pruient), Stegm, Sickness and Skin Crime. The first CD (that I know of) based on the theme of Bestiality. Comes packaged in a 5"x5" screen printed box with fake fur inside. $10.00 - * Prurient Body Language LP OK....most people don't know about Prurient...it's the project of Hospital Productions label founder, Dominick Fernow. You've probably seen some Prurient tracks on various comps and splits. If you want to check Prurient out I highly recommend this album. It is some of the most interesting sounds I've heard in a while. "After appearing on dozens of cassette and CDr releases, Rhode Island based noise outfit, PRURIENT, issue their first full length vinyl effort as the debut release of the PeelBackTheSky label. Led by Hospital Productions head cheese, Dom Fernow, PRURIENT takes the listener on a rollercoaster ride of rapid edits exploring harsh noise, "tranquil" environmental interludes, and bewildered vocal aerobics that unite meditation and mutilation into an entity of it's own. 400 copies were pressed on 180 gram vinyl." label press release (Peel Back the Sky/Hospital) $9.00 Intransitive Recordings - * Lionel Marchetti Knud un Nom de Serpent (le Cercle des Entrailles) CD Very different from the release on Ground Fault. "For his first domestic CD, Lionel Marchetti has created an intricate tape-music exploration of Shamanism and ecstatic states of mind. Spoken text, ritual music from Asia and Africa, and 'citations' (to use his term) from well-known works of 20th century experimental music are blended together into a fast-paced collage. In the composer's words, 'For a while, I have been very interested in Shamanism. When I began 'Knud', I had been reading 'Shamanism and Archaic States of Exctasy', by Mircea Eliade, in which I found descriptions of rituals, symbolism of objects such as the tambour, wings, animals and strange singing. These were not far from a place of spirit that I have wanted to share. The composition is able to make the listener live with my mythology, more aware of the world's potential forces'." - label press release. $11. - * Gal Relisten CD " The work of Austrian sound artist Bernhard Gal is concerned with the discovery (as opposed to the imposition) of musical structures within the nuances of everyday life. The stammering in the spaces of spoken language, the ubiquitous noise of urban environments, the steady stream of of buzzes and whirrs that are a byproduct of mass transportation, all become subjects examined under Gal's extraorinarily precise microscope. He explores ideas about time and language, extrapolating and enlarging and repeating the often overlooked details and minutae until their inherent sonic beauty supercedes their typical mundane habitat." $11.00 - * V/A Variious 2xCD Twenty-one new works of contemporary electro-acoustic and electronic music by our favorite artists. Sound by: Taylor Deupree (US), John Watermann (Austr.), Justin Bennett (Neth.), Michael Prime (UK), Kevin Drumm (US), Toshiya Tsunoda (Japan), Howard Stelzer and Brendan Murray (US), Roel Meelkop (Neth.), Jerome Noetinger (France), Pimmon (Austr.), *0 (Japan), Jos Smolders (Neth.), Klas Augustsson (Sweden), Martin Tetreault (Canada), John Hudak (US), the Brutum Fulmen (US), Marc Behrens (Germany), Richard Chartier (US), Voice Crack (Switz.), Brume (France), Jason Lescalleet (US). Text by: Achim Wollschied. Numbered edition of 1000 in slim double-jewelcase." - label press release. $16.00 - Kapotte Musiek The Use of Recycling CD "Kapotte Muziek (aka Frans De Waard, Beequeen, Goem, Shifts) obsessive reworking of previous pieces means no project is ever truly finished. Here his materials are his own earlier experimental recordings and two reel-to-reel tapes given to him by Yeast Culture. Intense blocks of distorto-noise and worn tape hiss are his favored methods of attack. What comes out the other end sounds like a tiny windworn landscape, gradually overwhelmed by dust and heat." The Wire $11.00 Manifold - Jeph Jerman "Beach Tree and Birds" CDr "Second release on the A Pyrrhic Victory CDR label see Jeph Jerman dumping the Hands To name. Jerman decides to be completely anonymous on this disc, you wont find his name or a title to this work anywhere on the package, 'Beach Tree and Birds' is simply the first of the four tracks. Pure and unadulterated field recordings featuring what sounds like real-time manipulation going on...or maybe not. Lacks a lot of the hiss and tape glitches on other Hands To location pieces, but still retains its lo-fi status. We get to ghost around in these places: Beach Tree and Birds, Bamboo And Birds, Sycamore Creek, Puget Sound And Stones. Outstanding dreamlike journey into other places and times, this hour long CDR is recorded on quality, durable brand CDR blanks, and housed in a safe Digipack case, covered with old national geographics maps and other strange objects." label description $9 (Pyrrhic Victory) - DJ Spooky/Merzbow Subsidia Pataphysica 10" Masami Akita destroys the B-side with twelve minutes of noise variations, several shifts within the piece make it sound like three tracks. Differing noise constructs, one slow and sparse, the first harsh and fiery, the third somewhat erratic yet subdued....33 rpms of supreme violence! Spooky does two tracks, one reflective and huge with shimmering tonal tidal waves, the second a corrupt beat ride, very slow and thick, creeping into the marrow and staying there. $8.00 - DJ Spooky+Arto Lindsay Form or Function 10" Spooky does his stuff, two tracks, one a frequency and aural storm, the other beats and resonating space. Lindsay takes a guitar and seems to use a welder on it, hitting it every few seconds. It's writhing in agony. $8.00 - Steve Roach Early Man CD Encased between two thick slabs of natural gray slate, Steve Roach draws out strains of endless time in several different tracks, traversing the firmament between consciousness and the primitive man. Only 1000 will be made, not many sold in the United States. $20.00 - * Aube Set On CD An Aube record that's more like early Lull or Final than anything else: echoing thunders puncuate a revolving, grating landscape. Comes in a rockboard slipcase with intentionally raw edges, roughly cut, cold and heavy, like the music. All sounds harvested from stones. $13.00 - * Maeror Tri Meditamentum II CD This disc collects only the best tracks from rare and out-of-print Maeror Tri cassettes and compilations. Not a documentation, this is more like a "best of", bringing together in one seamless, 74 minute journey, ten of the rarest, yet most moving, powerful guitar ambient soundscapes ever created by this German trio. $10.00 - Augur/Birds of Tin Strange Seeds Come from Odd Flowers CD Reminds me of Zoviet France, Hands To, Rapoon $12.00 - V/A The Nature of Sand CD Illusion of Safety/Life Garden/Voice of Eye. Mastered for exquisite digital sound that sounds in no way live, The Nature of Sand finds IOS and Life Garden dwelling in a ritual space, subterranean darkambience and primitive rhythm marking out the ends of human existence, the beginning of the soul. A lengthy and satisfying track with a somehow inspirational tone beneath the nightmare. The Illusion of Safety colab with Voice of Eye is complete tonal and textural magnificence, the shimmering drones, crisp, rich and penetrating, take control of the listener in the first few minutes and don't let go for the next thirty-five or more minutes. Unbeleivable. Artwork by David Oliphant. $9.00 - V/A Guru Means Slayer of Darkness CD Illusion of Safety/Hands To/Beequeen. Three unreleased 20+ minute pieces by these artists demonstrating radical processes of environmental de/reconstruction. IOS creates a beautifol tension in 'Cracks Appear', Beequeen does an cyclic, underwater sounding piece called 'Atem' while Hands To punctuates low rumblings with everyday sounds in meaningful collage. An hypnotic, thoughtful journey in three parts. $9.00 - V/A Narratives: Music for Fiction CD Paul Schutze/Voice of Eye/Robert Rich. Three artists contributing very lengthy, original, unpublished pieces themed after individual works of classic fiction. The eight minute Schütze piece is trademark rhythm over textures, the VOE is a three part journey into the world of Herman Hesse' 'Siddhartha'. Robert Rich creates soundtrack for 1930's sci-fi writer Olaf Stapledon's 'Starmaker'. $9.00 - DJ Spooky+Quoit Delerium Tremens 10" Mick Harris does his masterful and unrelenting drum & bass weirdness on one side, giving maybe one of the most interesting tracks Quoit has produced yet. Spooky more than holds his own, first with a beautiful piece of sweeping, low-flying sentimental ambient with faraway bass-sounds, then with an extremely hardcore dub/d&b track that is very catchy and very original. Showing that he deserves every ounce of acclaim he gets in the more mainstream electronic/DJ scene. Still on the throne! $8.00 - Augur Tree Sap for a Heart CDr Bold aural impressions of resurrection, mummification, morbid habitations and minimal, concrete sound patterns. Groans, breathing, murmured words, near-silent penetrations into the smoky afterworld. Repeated aural ghosts whispering for life and then receding. An antiseptic, zombified soundtrack for a museum visit to an abandoned afterlife world. In slim, fourcolor screenprinted printed earthtone jacket with numerous odd clipping from old book, maps and etchings. (A Pyrrhic Victory) $9.00 - Augur Xibalba CDr Rapoon and Zoviet France collide into Eric La Casa/Jeph Jerman style field recordings. A tint of ancient Mayan/Prehispanic culture in attitude and subtle sound. Xibalba is inspired by Mayan myths of twin deities who journeyed into the underworld. The music is a suitably chilling and all-enclosing environemnt, like the walls of some great cavern covering us over, we slip through the ritual madness of distant percusssion, the torn embodiment of spiritual musiks/magiks wafting like the moke of burnt offerings through our awareness, into a distant hole in the roof. Contained in this land of shifting loops and primeval music, its Rapoon-like, but dissected and odd-patterned. Like an hour in a Kiva on some alien planet, in an alien version of native american culture, wrestling with ghost-spirits from an afterworld we can never experience. Stunning material. (A Pyrrhic Victory) $10.00 - Augur The Smallest Granules of Time CDr Weird coincidence and mutual inspiration by label and artist added up to birth of this phenomenally personal release. Steve Brand of Augur recieved a package of old family photographs in the mail and the ensuing emotions, images and ideas resulted in the music and concept of 'All The Smallest Granules Of Time'. At about the same time, we gremlins at Manifold/A Pyrrhic Victory came across rolls of discarded motion micture film and ancient negatives from some long-dead, unknown mystery family and were struck with this notion: "wouldn't it be great if one of the artists we deal with could make a soundtrack using these sorts of images and ideas". A query put to our first choice, Augur, revealed the syncronicity of our projects, namely that he had already been working on such a thing even as we found our materials. Using old recordings, scratchy phonographs, dark, murky atmospheres and subtle, collaged environment switches, Brand weaves an oddly intimate sound-film thats both nostalgic and obscure. The covers of the discs feature a small, poignant black and white photo of his ancestors, the case of the disc is transparent, filled with whole and shredded 8mm film and spooky black and white negatives. With a small recorded history of 1 CD, 1 12" and 1 10", Staalplaat believed enough in the special (or should that be 'spatial'?) quality of Troum as a live act, to convince the VPRO 'De Avonden' to record a session at their studio, one late, one dark afternoon in December 1999. The material captured here, as one long track, is the resultant of various concerts in Germany and Poland. Troum plays music that infiltrates the head, that works on the right side of your brain. Music that is filled with texture, derived from guitars, bass and prerecorded tapes. Troum is a natural successor to Maeror Tri, still bearing their trademarks, but with a distinct sound of their own." - label description. limited edition of 600 copies. (Staalplaat) $12.00 - M Northam & J Grzinich "the stomach of the sky" CD 'Here are two sound artists investigating a 'trans-physical' approach exploring organic acoustic forms based on densely layered and shifting environments using both micro and macro-sonic elements. This document incorporates an extended palette of acoustic sources: long wire devices, found materials, assembled devices, and field recordings - culled from a years worth of recordings from studio and site-specific locations in both Europe and North America. 'an unfolding exercise of listening to the earth's magnetic blood-flow.'" (Staalplaat) $12.00 - Francisco López "untitled (1981-83)" 3" CD extremely minimal, almost silent soundworks recorded between 1981-83 and remastered 1998. Packaged in a slimline case with no artwork. Limited edition of 250. (Staalplaat) $8.00 - * Beequeen "Time Waits for No One" CD "Beequeen is a Dutch duo of Frans Kinkelaar and Frans de Waard. Formed in 1988, they took their name from the work of Joseph Beuys. They describe their music, following Beuys, as 'a living warmth organism'. By using guitars, synthesizers, samplers (on this new CD reduced to a minimum) and tape collage Beequeen create a dense tapestry which can best described as 'dark ambiance'. 'Time Waits For No One' is Beequeen's second CD, with recordings made from 1992-1993. Nine tracks based around the theme of time. Track titles refer to past events. From the ambient soundscapes of 'Whispering Confessions' and 'Der Holzweg' to the up tempo, almost beat pieces like 'Illusions', this CD is much more coherent than their first CD. This is due in part to the larger role played by guitars. The final piece (a four part suite 'Six Notes On Blank Paper') is a 20 minute excursion in playing guitar the way it shouldn't be played; it uses electric and acoustic guitar and bass guitar for sounds ranging from drones to rhythms. The ambient music of Beequeen is surely a step forward in the current ambient flow, setting new, more distant borders. A Dutch journalist described Beequeen as being on the crossroads where Aphex Twin and Nurse With Wound just didn't meet. The CD is packed in an eight panel digipak, designed by Antoin Bulssink." (Staalplaat) $12.00 - Zbigniew Karkowski & Tetsuo Furudate World As Will CD "Staalplaat's 1998 release of World as Will (the title is taken from Schopenhauer's famous philosophical work) comes as an anomaly in the output of its two collaborators. Zbigniew Karkowski and Tetsuo Furudate are most well-known for their electronic performances, but for this release they have collaborated on two fully composed orchestral works, played here by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Karkowski and Furudate continue a tradition most closely connected with Greek composer Iannis Xenakis (one of Karkowski's teachers and primary influences), where the orchestra creates a strange and bewildering sound world, far removed from most concert halls. The longer of the two pieces presented here, "Consolidated World," opens with thunderous drum beats, with the orchestra creating eerie drones that eventually overtake the drums. Augmented by an array of percussionists, the orchestra blends sirens, brass alarms, wailing voices, and other unidentifiable sounds. The authors' work in electronics is evident in some of their constructions, which sometimes sound like overlapped tape loops. "Floating World" is a piece for strings, starting with a cello line slowly rising to meet a constant tone without vibrato, then dissolving into a complex cacophony once the two lines meet. Xenakis' influence is in evidence here, but both pieces have lives of their own, and show that even after the orchestral advances of the serial composers, there is still interesting and challenging work written for orchestras today." - Caleb T. Deupree - All Music Guide (Staalplaat) $12.00 - Null GeV CD "Although KK Null is often lumped in with Merzbow & co. as an "extreme" artist (like, file under "noise"), few, if any, of his recordings are so easily definable. His latest offering, GeV (in Physics an abbreviation for "giga electron vault", a unit of particle energy: the term 'Null GeV' thus signifies an absence of such energy) is as awesome and as intricate as the gorgeous Seldon Hunt artwork that graces its cover. The opening tracks from it, short but welded effectively one to another, gleam and glitter like distant stars viewed through some impossibly powerful telescope. Ten of these gems pass in a blur of power and beauty: an effortlessly looping journey in a massive shiny spacecraft, followed by the fog and frog-croaks of a faraway planet, then off again for another fifteen minutes of spin and sparkle through the black froth of the unknown. The best is kept for last, a long final track that sets blistering noise bursts on top of tight, shimmering electronics." The recordings Achim made were treated by Tietchens, who has composed musique concrete since 1965 and produced his first record in 1980. Three compositions by Tietchens using Wollscheid's sounds. plus three hidden tracks with the original sound material. Carton sleeve design is by Selektion Optik." - label press release. $10.00 - * Pimmon "Orquesta Del Arrurruz" CD EP "Staalplaat is proud to present the seventh release in their 'material series', this one by Pimmon. Now what is the 'material series'? A series of CD's with microscopic, microwave, glitch, click or whatever it is called music. All CD's are packed in jewel cases with no print work. All information is etched on the CD box itself. Inside special material is housed, like, in this case artificial grass. The CD itself is a so-called AB CD: a small ring with music, and the outside of the CD fully transparent. This is not always a 21 minute or less CD! Pimmon = Paul Gough. The name acts as an empty canvas for his otherworld soundscapes. Gough has managed to keep a unique sound that is both emotive and dreamlike. Buzzes and blips, distorted rumbles, ghosts of melody, radar pulses, glitched ambiance all are melted into an unpredictable slab of sound that fluctuates on and off. Minimal and maximized sounds weave without sounding unfocused. Microscopic worlds that are zoom-lensed into grainy focus, alien and yet vaguely familiar, an emotive call from the distance. The Orquesta Del Arrurruz ('Arrowroot Orchestra') was inspired by the talent and eccentricities of Glenn Gould. Samples were taken from a variety of Gould recordings and I tried to create some of the social nervousness and fears that he exhibited, but also the emotion and joy he was able to enthuse in his playing. (Aesova) $8.00 - A.M.K. Recant CDr (Wholeness Recordings) $8.00 - Mick Harris & Ambre Dys CD "Dys, is the collaborative effort of Mick Harris (UK) and Ambre (Belgium). In his legendary Birmingham studio The Box, using the many samples the Belgian trio prepared for him, Mick Harris constructed a very original and dense piece of contemporary electronic music. Hushush provided the artistic freedom many labels would not give him and in return, Mick provided another distinguishing development of his musical career. Being never really far from the sonic studies Mick Harris conducted with Lull, Quoit and Scorn, this release is nevertheless distinctive in the way it treats the very concept of music. Abandoning the usual structure of chorus and verse. They instead use effects such as motion in space, textures, colours and sudden disruptions. Mick Harris and Ambre are taking their audience on a trip into a very dense and subtle universe of sparkling and colourful sound experiments. Dys' five tracks are a tribute to the true innovations given to contemporary music by the European school of electro-acoustic music." label press release $10.00 (Hushush) - Ambre & Mark Spybey Sfumato CD " The album has been recorded during an epic two weeks session at l'Auberge de la Mouette Rieuse on the North Sea shore in De Haan (Belgium) in September 1999 by Ambre with tapes provided by the English artist Mark Spybey. well known as ex-member of Zoviet*France, Download (along with cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy) and SPASM. While Ambre's other side projects such as Torsion and Axiome are more focused on distorted industrial chaos, this collaboration with Mark Spybey is exploring the universes of electro-acoustic, ambient music and minimal electronic. It's giving the listener the opportunity to discover a very singular world made out of random jazzy samples and very touching harmonies. The result is very well organized but as none of the members of this collaboration are well behaved, this disc is giving you the chance the get many surprises even if you are already familiar with the former productions on the two entities" label press release $10.00 (Hushush) - Amps For Christ 1-Eyed Cyclops 7" (Empty Chairs) Featuring Bastard Noise/MITB members Barnes/Wood/Snarb. Behrens Integração CD "Integration is a composition I performed live in several versions.Usually the title integrates the language of the place where the piece is performed. In all the performances there is a basic repertoire of sounds - a nucleus of tree recordings made in a mountain forest close to the Italian/Slovenian border in 1998, which in the performance arrangement became broadened with more recent material from 2000 (for example compilation work such as Multiplication, a re-interpretation of a composition by John Hudak) as well as different older material like Elapsed Time (released by Intransitive Recordings, USA), and remixes I made in autumn/winter 2000 of older work dating from 1992 and 1993, some of the latter featured on the CD Transition (released by Edition..., USA). The tree recordings were made by shaking the trees, thus the patterns of the sounds were generated partly by the plants, partly by human intervention, and arranged later according to coincidences and inherent keys in the material. Some of the performances were characterized by long silent pauses (up to two minutes). On this CD, Integration of Silence reflects this fact. Integração now bears a title in portuguese without location, because it was not performed. Nevertheless it sits as a studio version encoded on a compact disc released in Portugal. For the version on this CD I used the tree recordings along with a few field recordings of urban infrastructure, made during the preparation of the composition Advanced Environmental Control and later, preserving the original intention of the first performance: integration of a naturalistic and a technicized conception of sound." This is absolutely true if you can listen to "Secret Sleeping Birds", a work that explains by itself why "Pimmon remains a distinctive artist within a rarefied tradition of sound exploration". Pimmon works on shaping diversity. Instead of the fashionable contemporary reductive aproach, that descends from a long line of puritan thought, Pimmon shapes different materials without erasing them completely, without reducing them to a single "essential' trace or idea. He prefers shifting their energy, like an achimist, in a organic manner, focusing in minimal blocks of sound intertwining microstructures in a elegant and pervasive granular surgery mode.
