Ullrich Bemmann __________________________________________________ IEM (Russia) > http://iem.nigilist.ru Here is it - epochal release of our time, a history, anthology, manifesto and memorandum of power electronics. How popular is this style of music? Does it need the promotion or is charismatic enough to find the response in the heart of every struggled person? The only evident thing: this is burning music, it makes a sense, and turns the voice to the storm! The thundernoise, the violent screams, the dead rhythms will forward you into the damned dimension of aural hell. If there is something revolutionary left in the music generally, it's here, in current power electronics roster. L.White is the newborn label located in eastern Germany, which was furiously emerged from the environment of Sektion B project members. The main goal of L.White is quite similar to its english like-minded colleagues from Open Wound - they support all forms of cultural terrorism (and maybe not only cultural one?) This compilation is their first regular CD release, so one can send them congratulations and buy a copy, for reasons of solidarity at least. The proved highlights are tracks of Anenzephalia, Atrax Morgue, Grey Wolves, Propergol, Rasthof Dachau, Streicher, Taint, but also many many other good and remarkable projects. So it's the right guide to action. Time to hunt... Dmitry Vasilyev __________________________________________________ JUDAS KISS 9 (UK) > http://www.judaskissmagazine.co.uk Like a fucking bolt out of the blue, Lilly White Records release one hell ofa noise compilation. Sprawled over three CD's each containing around 70minutes of extreme noise and death industrial music (?), 'Don't Hunt What You Can't Kill' sets itself up instantly as a release that can't be over looked for anyone who is either a fan of these ear splitting genres or someone who is just plain curios and wants to explore how intense and soul destroying this type of music an be. However, not content with giving us over 210 minutes of aural nightmares, L. White haven't taken the easy option and stuck a pile of unknown artist together to create this collection, on the contrary, they collected together 40 of the noise and death industrial scenes most well respected names and included an exclusive track by each of them, which just adds to the sheer professionalism the label has shown in compiling this intensely disturbing journey in the sickened heart of musical extremities. A full run down of the artists included can be found on the labels website, however highlights include Thorofon, ExOrder, Anenzephalia, Virologic (Predominance), Axon Neuron/Vagwa, Streicher, D?dsd?md, Today I'm Dead, Atrax Morgue, Murderous Vision, Propergol, Taint, and The Grey Wolves! So for your listening displeasure, you really can't do any better than 'Don't Hunt What You Can't Kill', which is limited to only 500 copies, because of the sheer quality of artists aural raping noise they produce it tears shreds off most other compilations that try and highlight the same genres and proves itself to be a compilation that only the very strongest of listeners will be able to handle, and rightly so. __________________________________________________ KRONIC (Italy) > http://www.kronic.it Terrorumore! Sama pätee tällä kokoelmalla olevaan Truth Will Triumphiin. Ei se siltikään huono ole. Kakkoslevy alkaa surullisen vanhan miehen laululla, joka johdattaa Rasthof Dachaun kappaleeseed jossa on "old school power electronics" -henkeä. Today I´m Dead tarjoaa mukavasti jytisevää marssinoisea, kun taas Sektor esittää lisää loistavaa monotonista tietokonepirinämusiikkia. Englannin veteraanimiehet The Grey Wolves näyttävät miten New Yorkin terrori-iskuja käsitellään tyylillä kappaleellaan Flightpath to Allah. Lähes yhtä kivuliasta on Alienlovers in Amagasakin noise, jonka jälkeen Thorofonin monotinen pörinä kuulostaa jo pelastukselta. Kokoelmaa vertaa mielellään toiseen tuoreeseen ja todella korkealaatuiseen tapaukseen, nimittäin Getting Away with Murder (nämä kaksi voidaankin varmasti katsoa jonkinlaisiksi tämän päivän voimaelektroniikan virstanpylväiksi). Getting Away with Murder on kompakti kooste tämän päivän huippunimiä, kun taas Don´t Hunt What You Can´t Kill on paljon kattavampi ja monipuolisempi (mutta myös laadullisesti vaihtelevampi) katsaus meluisan industrialin alalle. 'Should be impressive… It could be like, a massive compilation, but it's immediately tempered by the design of the 3 panels digipack. Minimal information. A booklet & special package, like a boxset or something, would do with such content. As for criticism over the thing as a whole, the mastering could have been better as sound level varies sometimes too much from one track to the other. Then as for the material featured, there's a fair amount of diversity, maybe too much but I don't complain. It also varies from superior or excellent, to mediocre, & worse. To start with what I consider "bad": SRP, SEKTOR, no need to be descriptive. STREICHER fills up 12'40" with the "Royal Household Cavalry Sonata" with only simple background noise added. "In honour of Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth", very funny. The average is the majority, depending how high you place your standards it's not a bad point. To mention some… SEKTION B could have couple effective tracks on their LP or elsewhere, but on their "Crimetime (short remix)" contribution it gets obvious again, as on stage, what's wrong with them: the vocals. Then it involves good sounds in the background, the final part of the track without vocals is enjoyable. There are couple surprises, couple contributions by projects I tend to usually dislike that I enjoy here. It's the case with DRAPE EXCREMENT, the elements they placed together (church ceremony, stomp, guitar tapping) fit, not over the top but okay. It's also, to a lesser extent, the case with DRESDEN 45 or TODAY I'M DEAD (pounding side-project of Marco Corbelli of ATRAX MORGUE), both projects not too exceptional by themselves but better in the situation of a compilation, amidst other projects' styles, gaining in impact. RASTHOF DACHAU tends to repeat himself too much these days, discursive tracks mainly based on the impact of his voice with simple background accompaniment. Once in a while it's okay, too often it looses its impact. The track is fine, better than on a full-length along with a collection of similar pieces. The very distorted/effected voice opening AZOIKUM power-noise assault following next is a fine prolongation. There is also KRIEGER, one of R.D. side-project that seems to specialize in the rough use of obvious samples; the track intro is a well-known extract of a WWII german radio program (I guess something easy to find in austrian libraries), then the rest of the track is old-school PE. ANON PLUS, the project of J.Mattila of Kaos Kontrol, has here its only known track, based on a main sample repeated all through, along with quiet droning keyboards, some sparse concrete intrusions, more samples, bit by bit rising in intensity & involving rather delayed processed vocals, not immediately recognizable as vocals. Not exceptional but enjoyable, making me wonder what could come next from ANON PLUS. Of the few unknown names, the one that retained my attention the most must be PTT (PressToTransmit), an evolution to follow from now on. If there's some kind of tournament on the noise front between MURDEROUS VISION, D?DSD?MD, SICKNESS, GOVERNMENT ALPHA, BLANK BANNER, INDUSTRIEPALAST & SK, ALIENLOVERS IN AMAGASAKI, TAINT, HUMAN DESTRUCTUR, SKIN CRIME & LEFTHANDEDDECISION, then I think SKIN CRIME wins. I don't find the WOLVES in their best form, still their jerkily pounding "Flightpath to Allah" with a steward repeating "Destination: New York City" is a good one. The excellent is provided by PROPERGOL, & very surprisingly by NAPALMED too; his piece is rather unusual, sort of more contemporary music oriented than noise: place a floating shiny drone with spiritual reminiscences all along & everything goes. & then you have the superior: CO.CASPAR.osp sharing wisdom, & ANENZEPHALIA opening. "Good night pets. Get into your cages." __________________________________________________ PAST AND PRESENT (Faroe Islands/Denmark) > http://pastandpresent2.tripod.com + http://www.geocities.com/pastandpresent2001 Three CDs worth of music, or should we just say three CDs worth of noise? I am telling you this is one of the most brutal and noisy CDs I've heard all year. 30 artists contribute to this thing, and they do it with some of the hardest power electronics, high-tech noise, darkwave and industrial imaginable. Of course, with this much material there's some junk to be found on here. Some stuff that really just sounds like all other artists within this genre, and therefore doesn't seem to be of importance, but on the other hand there are also artists that try to do things differently. Not that anything on here is truly original or anything, but it serves a cause and is probably a perfect soundtrack for musical terrorism, if you will. Standout artists: Anon Plus, Sektor, Sektion B, Atrax Morgue, Thorofon and Streicher (ok, not really my thing, but their classical piano-industrial (can we call it that?) titled "Royal Household Calvary Sonata" that was made in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth (1900-2002) isn't likely to be something you've ever heard before). Hans Jakup Eidisgard __________________________________________________ VENGEANCE (Greece) First off let me say in honor of L.White Records, great job on the structure of projects you have put together here. This has got to be one of the best compilations for power electronics I have ever heard! This Comp. goes beyond boundaries unreached by many other followers. I received this trio of cd's in the mail the other day and was shocked at the quality of the artwork and packaging, it was brilliant! It looked of pure hate and aggression. CD 1 The artwork was no lie as I put this cd into my player and hooked in my headphones and pressed play, an ungodly wall of doom entered my ears. •track 1 from Anenzephalia called "Voice of Freedom" was the start of this harsh noise riot, and what a perfect start this was as I listened to the calm void build up to landscapes of terror fading out just in time for •track 2 from Murderous Vision, a live track titled "Random Attack". This track was harsh with low drop d distorted vocals "scary" enough to make a child cry. This first cd of three in the set has 13 tracks ranging from all sorts of medias and artists from all over the world. I can't really get into every track without writing a novel but let me say it's nothing words can explain. This cd is power from start to finish with more tracks from: Drape Excrement, Dodsdomd, DJK, Axon Neuron/Vagwa, Dresden 45, Sickness, Anon plus, SRP, Government Alpha, Strom.ec and Virologic. CD 2 This cd starts a little differently with low drawn out drones with what sounds like a sample of a song a father would sing to a child when trying to get them to sleep. The words are from a language I don't recognize but this calm darkness ends abruptly when Rasthof Dachau screams there hatred until the end of the track leading into more vulgar depths of pure electronic war when Azoikum's track tilted "Gainesville Dementia" kicks in and wrecks the sleep over. Nobody will be able to sleep to this cd because there is nothing more then power noise drums in the forecast for • track 3 from Today I'm Dead drops in for a night cap. Other participants on the disk are Blank Banner, Sektor, a very powerful track from "The Grey Wolves" titled 'Flight Path To Allah" that tells me a story of leaders sending there troops to everlasting life. The Others here are Industriepalast & SK, Napalmed, a kick ass short remix of "Crimetime" from Sektion B, more sick terror from Atrax Morgue, Alienlovers in Amagasaki, Thorofon, Taint, Grunt and CoCaspar.osp. This was the perfect cd to follow the brilliant first so lets see if the 3rd will stand or fall. CD 3 This third cd not only stands up straight but it also has a kickstand!Brutal from start to finish with scary ass samples and machine driven power. This cd doesn't want to end and if you stop it you will want to restart it. After listening to this cd, you will want to be the top story on Headline News, you will want to become a cult icon! Phosgen starts this cd out with a track tiltled "Everyday Madness" and that's exactly what it sounds of. Other tracks include Ex.Order, Human Destructur, Irikarah, Krieger, PTT, Skin Crime, a heartless attack by Survival Unit titled "Survive the Night", Propergol, Wutanes Heer, a super high pitched locomotive of static by Lefthandeddecision, to the Santa clause at the end of this parade from Streicher with a track called "Royal Household Cavalry Sonata" (in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth, 1900 - 2002) but this Santa isnt throwing out candy this year because he has a sack filled with anthrax for all the children of the world T. Appleton __________________________________________________ LE VESTIBULE (Canada) "With 40 international artists, this triple compilation is a great overview of the extreme underground electronic culture that is prolifically alive despite existing away from the common awareness that seems to rule this world. But even if you don't want to lend an attentive ear, you can not turn away from these compositions when they reveal themselves. Your whole perception is than confronted to a wide spectrum of electronic experimentations... chaotic amalgalm of sonic deconstructions... apocalyptic rendition of power and intensity... dark atmospheric distorsions... corroded industrial soundscapes... manipulated frequencies, synthetic textures, mechanical structures, hypnotic oscillations... from aggressive mayhem to penetrating ambiences... from assaulting to evocative... as you're reading, you might wonder if you could be able to even try listening to what these descriptive words suggest, but you don't have to worry, you don't even need to be openminded, just trust the music and your mind will be open... wide open."
